The first stone castle at the site of Enniscorthy Castle was built in the 1190’s by an anglo-norman knight. It was severely damaged in the 1370’s when Art MacMurrough Kavanagh attacked the site in an attempt to win back his ancestral land. In 1569, the Earl of Kildare burned down Enniscorthy Castle and then Queen Elizabeth handed the castle over to Edmund Spenser in 1581. The site was used by Cromwellian forces as a prison during the 1798 rebellion before it became the private residence of the Roche family until the vacated the site in 1951. In the years after that, the site became home to the Wexford County Museum and then it closed for refurbishments in 2006. Enniscorthy Castle re-opened in 2011 and now it is open to the public as it houses exhibitions about the origins of the town of Enniscorthy as well as the town itself.

‘Lovely hotel, Friendly Staff and Lovely Food’

“Lovely hotel. We had dinner there and enjoyed lovely food. Our room was nice and clean and we had a lovely sleep. The staff were lovely and friendly. There are plenty of parking spaces at the hotel so we parked when we arrived and walked around the town. We visited the castle which was beautiful.

‘A Magical Gem Tucked Away’

“Treacys is reasonably centrally located and is just a short walk from the Castle and other places of interest. We received a true Irish welcome and the reception staff were most attentive.”
