Johnstown Castle
Johnstown Castle Estate, Museum & Gardens has a long and colourful story stretching over 800 years. Situated outside Wexford town in Ireland’s south east, it is not only a significant property of national importance but a place of great romantic charm and tranquility. The spectacular lake walks, walled gardens and sculptures all offer the beautiful setting for the great 19th-century castle.
Johnstown Castle Estate, Museum & Gardens opened in summer 2019 as a brand new ‘3 in 1’ visitor attraction – a significant addition for Irish tourism and Ireland’s Ancient East. Conservation and upgrading works on the Gothic-Revival Castle have been undertaken and guided tours are now available for the first time on a daily basis, including the unique servants’ tunnel at an incredible 86 metres long.
Fittingly Johnstown Castle is also home to the Irish Agricultural Museum. The exhibitions in the museum have been designed to display and explore a history of Irish agricultural life from the turn of the 19th century until the mid-20th century. Staged over two floors and occupying 1,600 square metres, the galleries offer something for everyone and cover all aspects of farming life from transport and farm machinery to farm crafts and furniture and is a must see for any family.
Johnstown castle are open all year round and recommend you allow 2-3 hours for your visit to fully enjoy the castle, agricultural museum, lake walks and ornamental gardens. Our guided castle tour is one hour (pre-booking is advised). The new visitor centre has indoor and outdoor seating including a café and shop. There is ample free parking and coaches are very welcome. Plan your visit here.
