In 1870, John Henry Wellington Graham Loftus (the fourth Marquess of Ely) demolished the old Redmond Hall and built the present Loftus Hall over its foundations. A three storey non-basement mansion, Loftus Hall was bought in 1917 by the Sisters of Providence and turned into a convent. In 1983 it was purchased by Michael Devereau, who reopened it as the short-lived Loftus Hall Hotel.
In more recent times, the hall has become known as a haunted house, with a popular tour highlighting its gruesome and colourful past.
